Home Run Derby
by W.H.
Nelson Cruz has upper decked Busch stadium, Ryan Howard tried to kill his National League teamates, Joe Mauer was shut out while "Eye of the Tiger" was playing, and Brandon Inge was shut out. In the mean time we've learned that Mark Buerhle really wants to play for the Cardinals, Ricky Horton is the poorest interviewer with a press pass, and it takes roughly 10 children between the ages of 8-14 to cover as much ground as Chris Duncan. Speaking of that, why isn't children fielding major league line drives a reality show? Fox owns the baseball rights, they could make this happen.
Oh, Pujols is up....
Is he just toying with everyone? Is he pandering to Miklasz? Come on Albert, this is you.
Swing off...
Carlos Pena- 73 pitches, 5 swings, 1 home run.
Joe Mauer- looks they put an ump in the outfield after Pujols's saving grace. Joe is 0 for 5 nobody pulled his over the wall.
Albert Pujols- he wins it in 3 swings, I'm sure the "home field advantage" (i.e. guy in bleachers pulling a Jeff Maier on that homerun) he enjoyed will be discussed incessantly in the next 24 hour cycle.
Prince Fielder owns the 2nd round. A 503 foot blast. Howard and Pujols were too far behind to catch up but seriously, does anyone else in baseball hit line drives like Albert? The trajectory of his homers peak after the outfield fence. The ones that hit Big Mac Land are still rising.
Jack Clark brings out the Home Run Derby trophy. Harold Reynolds fist bumps him, or tips him, it's hard to tell from Sporty's seats. Which are of course "standing room". Seriously, what kind of budget do you think we have?
So Sporty may be eligible for some World Series tickets thanks to a 435 foot golden ball homer. But State Farm has made the rules for qualification impossible to understand. Perhaps an insurance rival should jump in and sponsor another event with less tedious requirements than State Farm's contest. How about a company to sponsor the Commissioner's Party? The "Progressive Party"?
Nelson Cruz's last shot is too high. But Fielder once again owns the round.. He's the champ. It's the only time in his career he'll get a standing O from a Busch Stadium crowd, unless he were to carry an injured Yadi around the bases in order to complete a home run celebration. Hell, at least the National League won something this week.
