Weekend thoughts

1. Reason #103 why soccer is cool- announcers can effectively utilize the term "dangerously fisting". No joke, it was in the call of the Man City - Aston Villa match.

2. Why hasn't a professional sports club broken out the lower case z in order to relate with the kids? I think that this could be a reasonably cheap promotion for teams with dwindling fan bases. THE ROYALz, THE CLIPPERz, THE LIONz. The kids would eat that stuff up.

3. T.O. to the Bills? The combination of him and Lee Evans may sound tempting, but will this really be in the Bills best interest when Owens starts inevitably throwing 2nd year starter Trent Edwards under the bus? Is anyone else looking forward to Canada denying him a work visa for the two games in Toronto?

4. Note to any baseball juicers who may be potentially outed, make sure there's an important surgery you've been delaying. If you can hide out for two months maybe everyone will forget about your indiscretions. Right? Right?

5. Fukudome, Johima, and Iwamura were the 7, 8, 9, hitters for Japan in the first game of the WBC. How good is a team that bats 3 of its 4 major league hitters at the bottom of the lineup?

6. How bad is the MLS? Only one of it's four teams made it past the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League. Meanwhile, the two USL teams that qualified for the tournament (USL is a close equivalent to AAA for you baseball fans) made the final eight and one made the final four. No MLS teams will be among the semi-final contenders.

That's it for now. Sporty will be back later this week with a piece from Killer about the WBC and probably something about American soccer. Remember, don't feed your mogwi's after midnight. I'm not sure if that's midnight Mean Time, or Eastern, or how Daylight Savings effects that. But there's important lessen there. It's a metaphor for life.
