BCS...Here we go again...

by Killer

Well here we are again, down to the last couple of weeks of college football with the possibility that the BCS could get it wrong once again.  Can it really be argued that the BCS is a complete embarrassment for the sport?  Does it really matter if a team makes a BCS bowl that is NOT the national championship?

As of right now the BCS national championship would be Texas vs. Alabama.  That’s all fine and dandy until Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State this weekend which may propel them to the #2 spot ahead of Texas.  Guess what?  Texas beat Oklahoma fair and square on a neutral field!  Two arguments really come about here:
1.  How can OK be ahead of Texas when Texas beat them?
2.  How can OK be left out because they pounded Texas Tech and beat OK State on the road and may be playing the best football in the country?

For the Boomer Schooner driving through Texas is like East St. Louis

A playoff can eliminate the arguments at the top.  If you ask any coach in college football if they’re happy with a BCS bowl they will say sure but our ultimate goal was to be in that national championship game.  This makes making a BCS bowl nice but disappointing at the same time.  Instead of arguing every single year about who should be in the national championship, make a playoff.  It isn’t like you don’t have time to pull this off.  Some teams take 40 -50 days off before their bowl game.  If its money you’re worried about than who wouldn’t pay to see a Texas vs. Oklahoma rematch or want to see Utah put themselves on the map and prove they can beat the best rather than beating up on lesser teams in a crap conference.

Allright, you girls can come to the championship. But your team has to stay home

A big problem with this BCS system is that we can’t get all the conferences on the same page.  Either everyone does a conference championship or no one does.  Seriously, Missouri still has a chance to get into a BCS bowl even if they lose to Kansas?  They clinched the big 12 north by beating no one that was any good.  Guess what Mizzou fans?  Every good team you played, BEAT YOU!  While it is highly unlikely that they will beat the likes of Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech it’s still possible.  If  Missouri somehow wins they will make the BCS and one or two of those great teams in the south gets left out.  Does that really make sense to anyone?  Does anyone other than Mizzou fans want to see them in rather than Texas Tech which will more than likely be that one on the outside looking in?  Same goes for the SEC.  For all you Florida lovers out there can we forget that you lost at home to Mississippi?  So called experts are calling for them in the National Championship.  Why?  Answer:  The big twelve can eliminate themselves all in the last two weekends.  If Oklahoma loses to Oklahoma State then Texas goes to the big 12 championship and loses to Missouri than Florida could be in the title game.  On the flip side teams like Oregon State and Penn State are in by doing practically nothing.  The Big Ten maybe the worst BCS conference in terms of hype and delivery and they get an automatic bid to the rose bowl?  Personally I would rather see another big 12 team get in and another SEC team.  Why does the rose bowl get this stupid pac-10 vs. big-10 match up?  Do you see the arguments now?

Even this had a playoff system

Lets face it folks, the BCS will never be fair to everyone and neither will a playoff.  A playoff allows the best to play the best and not this crap tradition of a national championship and a few other bowls that don’t really matter
